Operations performed in private hospitals

Compensation for treatment as a private patient in a hospital must always be applied for from the sickness fund’s Board of Directors beforehand. Treatment provided in the medical centres Aava, Mehiläinen, Suomen Terveystalo and other similar private medical centres is equated with treatment as a private patient where surgical treatment is concerned.

In 2023, 80% of doctor’s fees for operations and other comparable procedures performed in private hospitals can, at the Board of Directors’ discretion, be reimbursed, however, up to EUR 450 in total. The facility fee is reimbursed up to a maximum of EUR 100.

Compensation is paid for operations and procedures only where they are also reimbursable under the Health Insurance Act.

Each case is dealt with separately at the Board of Directors’ meeting and compensation must always be applied for from the sickness fund’s Board of Directors before the operation/procedure. The Board of Directors does not process applications that have been submitted after the event. The compensation application must state the procedure to be performed and a cost estimate.
